Reducing Your Body Weight with Alpha-Lipoic Acid!

Body weight is one of the most basic issues of human life. Self-esteem, acceptance among peers– and perhaps lifelong success or failure—are, unfortunately, all tied to our physical appearance. Medically speaking, not all overweight people are obese. Obesity is defined as weight that exceeds 15 percent of normal weight for height and body type. “Morbid” obesity exceeds 20 percent of optimum weight. The long-term health implications are well known, in fact, obesity is considered an outright disease. Life expectancy may be decreased in overweight and obese individuals. An obese person is at high risk for a number of serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, varicose veins, psychological stress, osteoarthritis, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Many scientists believe that Alpha-lipoic acid is an important antioxidant. One of its most key characteristics is that it is both fat-soluble and water-soluble. This enables it to provide antioxidant protection in a much wider range of body systems, which has resulted in some scientists referring to alpha-lipoic acid as the “universal” antioxidant.

A study published in the American Journal of Medicine was to determine whether alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) could be effective in reducing body weight in obese people. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 360 obese individuals with hypertension, diabetes mellitus or hypercholesterolemia. These subjects were randomly given alpha-lipoic acid 1200 mg per day or 1800 mg per day or placebo for 20 weeks. The results were the group taking 1800 mg of ALA experienced significantly more weight loss than the placebo group. The most common side effects from the ALA were urticaria and an itching sensation but these were generally mild. In conclusion the authors stated that “Alpha-lipoic acid 1800 mg/d led to a modest weight loss in obese subjects. Alpha-lipoic acid may be considered as adjunctive therapy for obesity.”1

I personally recommend using the R-ALA form of Alpha Lipoic Acid as it is the form found naturally in the found which makes it more bioavailable.  Jay’s daily dosage recommendation: 100mg to 300mg before each meal (3 times per day).  If you have additional questions, send me a message.

Eating Ourselves to Death!

One of the greatest gifts we possess as humans is the power to choose, and we use it recklessly.  We choose all kinds of things that are horrible for us.  This has never been truer than when it comes to our daily nutrition choices.  As Americans we have access to the best foods in the world, but unfortunately we also have access to the worst.   This is where we take the turn to reckless.  Instead of making healthy decisions, we make all kinds of excuses as to why it is easier and cheaper to just go thru the drive-thru and grab a happy meal.  Which should be renamed the unhappy meal for the havoc it wreaks on our bodies, but that is for a different conversation.

Based on obesity rate from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) we are the unhealthiest country in the World!

This is extremely sad to me.  When I am in public, sometime I just sit and observe the crowds of people.  I have determined based on my purely visual study, that 80 percent of the people I see are overweight.  I am not saying by any means that everyone needs to be in excellent shape and be able to run a 4 minute mile.  What I am saying is that as a society we are out of control.  We are growing at an excessive rate.

We will successful bankrupt on healthcare system by eating ourselves to death!

Here are some statistics to wrap you head around.  The following statistics are from the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

33.8% (1/3) of adults in the USA are obese (for details on how the CDC defines obese visit their website at http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/defining.html)

17% (12.5 Million) children and adolescents (age 2-19) are obese.

These numbers don’t include the millions that are overweight and borderline obese.  As a result of these staggering numbers the disease of diabetes is at an all-time high.  The American Diabetes Association states that 25.8 million children and adults in the USA have diabetes.  They estimate the cost of diabetes on the healthcare system to be $174 Billion Dollars (this dollar amount was based on 2007 statistics).  Can you imagine what the 2011/2012 cost will be?  $250 Billion?  Maybe more?

The sad true is that we can stop this epidemic.  We have the power to choose and we MUST start choosing our health over the happy meal.

“Texas Rangers Win with support from the team”

The Texas Rangers won the series against the Tampa Bay Rays with solid effort and the support of the TEAM.  Support is essential no matter what the goal.  Winning a baseball and losing weight both require support!  Make sure you have the rock solid support you need to achieve your goals.  My coaching servings are about way more than just nutrition and fitness.  Support, accountability and mindset are three major aspects of my programs.  I have clients all over the country and they all say the same thing as they move toward their goals, “without the support and coaching that Jay provides, I would not have made all the necessary changes and I would not be living this wonderful life that I have created for myself!
